MP4 vs WebM vs GIF: Which Format for Your Claude Animation?
When you export a Claude Design animation to video, you get three format choices: MP4, WebM, and GIF. They are not interchangeable. Pick wrong and you end up with a 40 MB "GIF" that looks grainy, or a transparent clip that shows a black box. Here's how to choose in ten seconds.
MP4 (H.264) — the default
Use it for almost everything. MP4 is the universal video format: it plays everywhere, compresses beautifully, and keeps full color and smoothness.

- ✅ Small files at high quality
- ❌ No transparency (the background is baked in)
If you're not sure, choose MP4.
WebM (VP9) — when you need transparency
Use it when the animation must sit on top of something. WebM supports an alpha channel, so you can export with a transparent background and layer the animation over a photo, a slide, or a colored section of a page.
- ✅ Transparent overlays, motion graphics composited in an editor
- ✅ Great quality-to-size ratio
- ❌ Not supported natively in some older apps; for a plain social post, MP4 is safer
To export transparency, turn on the transparent background option before rendering.
GIF — quick, silent, and everywhere
Use it for a short, looping snippet that needs to auto-play inline with zero friction — a README, a chat message, a docs page.
- ✅ Auto-plays and loops anywhere, no video player needed
- ✅ Universally embeddable
- ❌ Only 256 colors, and files get large fast — keep GIFs short and small
For anything longer than a few seconds, an MP4 will look better and weigh less.
